Description
In the throws of approaching night
Casting shadows as by firelight
The burning orb of Daytime's liege
Doth tire from work and slips 'neath
Tis not a leaving of a harried knave
Tis not with tail tucked in shame
Rather in glorious exhibition of benevolent might
Sun bids the world an emblazon g'night
~Michael W. May
It's been a while, dA.
This is the most recently completed project from my Visual Arts class: Illustration. Acrylic on canvas. We just had to choose (or write) a snippet of writing, be it a poem, song, or passage, to illustrate in a painting. I had a different poem entirely in mind when I started this, but as I worked on the sky first, I really started to like the painting as a skyscape, and decided to leave it as just that.
So then I changed my poem last second, doing reverse illustration pretty much. I just found this random poem on the internet that seemed to fit it well. Yay. (:
I've never really been strong in the painting area for some reason, but nevertheless I'm sort of satisfied by this piece. Even if I'm not the most technically skilled at painting, the piece as a whole is successful, I think. For the first time, I really played with color, and I feel that's one of the strongest points of the piece.
Used photos from #resurgere as sky reference.

EDIT: Changed levels to make it less red.

The image is rather moody and gives a portrayal of wind blowing through the grass and hills in the late evening.
Overall the image seems too dark though and a lot of the visual information is lost in the darkness. Whilst the strong outline of the hill against the pale yellow and pink sky works well, there is a distinct lack of contrast in most other areas of the image.
The grasses are also visible, but barely, which is a shame as they seem to be one of the key elements. Some stronger highlights on them would help to make them stand out more, maybe flesh out the gold colour in them more.
Some more refinement of the clouds would also help define the image more.
I think it would be really nice to see this image with some more improvement as it has good potential but needs some work in translating the mood and atmosphere without losing the details
